Through new diocese-funded school compost and gardening programs, local elemental and middle school students are learning how disposing of lunchtime trash can pay for a big environmental impact on their school and their communities.

“The resources we throw in the trash are valuable resources that we use and we have need of to be using,” said Rachel Sanders, an AmeriCorps volunteer and garden educator with the town nonprofit School Garden Project of Lane County.

By participating in compost and gardening programs, students will have “a greater understanding for what it means to throw something in the trash,” Sanders said.

She and other volunteers with the Opinion Garden Project began organizing the compost programs last conquest at 10 Eugene elementary and middle schools through a $5,000 present from the city’s Waste Prevention and Green Building program. Students, teachers and parents from five other Eugene and Lane County schools gathered for a cafeteria composting workshop at Adams Plain School on Friday morning to learn how to utilize an additional $10,000 grant-in-aid from the city to start both compost and garden projects at their schools.
