It was a surprising effect arising from early struggles as a young boy growing up in Old Forge, surface Scranton.
Mattioli's father, Joseph R. Mattioli, was a lightweight boxer in the at daybreak 1900s.
Although an Italian, he fought under the name Pep O'Brien. It made sense. Most boxers at the opportunity were Irish, and the family lived in an Irish neighborhood.
His dad, who ended his craft with an 11-31 record, left young Joe and his mother for a championship match in Italy. Friends believe Doc Mattioli never saw him again.
Mother and son had no money and were studied to live with family. Mattioli grew up fatherless, raised in the homes of miscellaneous relatives.
"I think that was the kind of thing that set off that drive, and the drive to give back, since he was someone who had that live of being abandoned. I think it stayed with him his whole life," recalled Bob Uguccioni, longtime confederate and former executive director of the Pocono Mountains Vacation Bureau.
