New Zealand urban area staff have settled on the design for new trash and recycling bins, much to the chagrin of the Downtown Event Board.

Council accepted Clean River Recycling Solutions' project for the supply and installation of 50 waste and recycling containers on Talbot Street during its rendezvous final meeting of the year.

The bins are Phase 1 of the city's accessible space recycling initiative.

Clean River's bid came in at $40,050, together with HST, but was not the lowest submitted.

"When we evaluated the proposals, there's a technical portion and a tariff portion and — when we evaluated all of the submissions — there were two that came out with the same total score," waste management co-ordinator Michelle Shannon explained.

"It came down to aesthetics and durability and things like that, so we evaluated both of them and picked the one that we notion would suit downtown, like the feel of what the DDB was kind-of going for in the downtown hall.
