A proposition to raise Carlsbad residents' trash collection bills by about $1 a month to pay for a new "automated" trash store system will go before the City Council on Tuesday night.

If fee increase proposal wins approbation, residents could expect to receive new, specially designed wheeled trash cans in June and see their bills expansion starting in July, city senior management analyst Christine Ruess said Thursday.

The new trash cans would be picked up by refuse trucks using mechanical arms ---- thus eliminating the miss for truck operators to get out of their vehicles and dump the cans into the trucks themselves.

The shift to automation also will admit Carlsbad to start offering what's termed "single-stream" recycling where residents send all their recyclables into one container and the garbage company sorts it later.

Carlsbad is one of the latecomers in the pale when it comes to automating its trash collection. Vista and Encinitas already offer it, and Oceanside is expected to exhaust distributing its bins this month.
