LOCKPORT—The megalopolis’s new recycling program has been so successful, some other Niagara County municipalities seem to be copying it.

As of April 1, the towns of Wheatfield and Wilson will change to Lockport’s method of distributing 64-gallon recycling bins to every domestic and emptying them every two weeks.

Lockport went to that system Oct. 10, when privatization of muck and recycling collection through a contract with Modern Disposal took impression.

Through the end of December, Lockport had saved $107,000 by dumping 441 fewer tons of trash in New-fashioned’s landfill than it had in the equivalent period in 2010, according to Dawn M. Timm, county environmental coordinator.

“That’s what I kept striking people would happen,” Timm said. “I’m happy I was right. I knew I would be.”

The city pocketed $4,300 through the sale of the recyclables.

Timm said 22 percent of Lockport’s trash was diverted to recycling during the privatized term. She had been hoping for 20 percent diversion.
