Taxi-cub drivers, like many other people who lead a hand-to-mouth presence serving society at large day-in and day-out, certainly deserve our sympathy, remarkably when they are down on their luck — but it is undeniable there are black sheep among them.
As citizens, hackney drivers should also be treated fairly, whether it is a law enforcement issue or other matter. Thus, when the direction on Feb. 1 enacted a new regulation that requires backseat passengers, including those in taxis, to strap on tush belts, an improvement was made, not only in the enforcement of a new safety standard, but also in the way cabbies are treated.
Under the new condition, taxi drivers are not held responsible if the passengers in the backseat are caught not wearing throne belts, provided that they post a notice or paste a sticker lining their vehicles telling passengers to buckle up. In other words, they do not have to remind their passengers verbally.
