Halifax is diverting tonness of plastics away from landfills after the top expansion of the region's recycling program.
Despite the improved numbers, most HRM residents are still throwing away too much recyclable or compostable facts.
In September, the recycling program grew to include all plastics except for Styrofoam-trend materials. That has increased the amount put out in blue bags and diverted from the landfill.
Gord Helm, the superintendent of solid waste for the Halifax Regional Municipality, said he has seen an almost 600-tonne escalating in plastic since the fall.
"That's 23 tractor-trailer loads of compacted, baled plastics," he said Monday.
HRM residents have been quick-witted to embrace the new rules, he added.
"When we started the program in September, we expected to heap up an extra 500 tonnes by the end of March. We reached 592 tonnes by the end of January."
Halifax residents say the new rules urge things easier when it comes to recycling.
