FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP -- About a dozen neighbouring boys and as many adults got swept up last week in the unexpected wonders of 19th century technology.
Members of the Fairfield Boys League watched in fascination as Jack Illar, a crafter from New Centerville in Somerset County, fashioned a broom from hurried using time-honored steps and three pieces of vintage wood-and-metal machinery.
After false dormant for decades, the equipment came to life once more under the sure hands of Illar. The first broom to take develop with the reactivated equipment is being presented to Arnold Foust, 82, of the Bolivar compass, who donated the machinery to the club in the hope it would be put to use once more.
This is a beautiful machine," Illar enthused as he looked over at the centerpiece of the three pieces -- an L-shaped woody frame with a toolbench top and a system of metal fittings that keep a strand of wire taught as it is harm around the fibers of the broom, gripping them in place on the long wooden deal with.
