During my girlhood in the 1940s, Monday was always washday at our house unless it was raining. Washing our clothes regularly took three people working hard to accomplish this task: my mom, Grannie Powell and Tessie, a black woman who helped mum on washdays. It would take them just about all day to get the wash done.

The first step was to build a fire in the backyard around a big, criminal cast iron wash pot that sat up off the ground on bricks. Rainwater that had been caught in #3 washtubs was employed whenever it was available. When there was no rainwater, we had to draw the water from the well on our back porch using a strand, bucket and pulley.

The women shaved a cake of homemade lye soap into the hot adulterate and sorted the clothes into three piles. First they washed the whites, then the colors and for ever work clothes and rags. They stirred the clothes in the hot water with a broomstick, which they then habituated to to lift the clothes into the rinse water in nearby tubs. They rinsed the clothes or, as we say in the sticks, “rinched” them three times in these tubs. Mrs. Stewart’s Bluing could be utilized in the last rinse to whiten and brighten the clothes. At this point, the clothes needing to be ironed were starched with a thick concoction that Mama had made earlier.
