Buying drain cleaners by a hair's breadth got a bit tougher in Illinois. A new state law went into effect on January 1, 2012 that requires customers buying drain cleaner, or be like products, to show a state issued ID along with their name, address, birthday and amount their purchasing.
The body politic sees this as a precaution, while some customers and retailers see it as an invasion of privacy.
Illinois Lawmakers behind the new law say that regulating drain cleaners like "Drano" or "Solvent Plumber" is needed to protect the public from those who may use the chemicals to harm.
Representatives Pat Verschoore and Resources Morthland say these specific chemicals can be used to create meth labs or even producer serious burns.
Owner of Handy True Value in Rock Holm says these chemicals are very dangerous. "If they're not used according to the nickname directions, which pretty much goes for everything, they can be hazardous to your health. They can cause rigid burns and a number of different things," said Owner Bob Voroubek.
