Als Heinrich Schnorrer vor mehr als 40 Jahren als Lehrling bei den Vereinigten Aluminiumwerken in Schwandorf anfing, hatte er es mit 220 Grad heißer, unter Druck stehender Lauge zu tun. Als Chemielaborant und später Chemotechniker bereitete er das Aluminium-Erz Bauxit auf, „das war manchmal recht gefährlich“. Der Wechsel zu Staedtler – damals noch Eberhard Faber – war für ihn, als würde er plötzlich „in einer Schokoladenfabrik“ arbeiten.

Denn plötzlich hatte er es nicht mehr Bauxit und Aluminiumhydroxid zu tun, sondern mit Knetmasse. Eberhard Faber hatte Mitte der 60er-Jahre die Rechte an der Knete, die damals noch nicht Fimo hieß, gekauft – von Sophie Rehbinder-Kruse, der Tochter von Käthe Kruse. Die Puppenmacherin hatte in Zeiten des Zweiten Weltkriegs begonnen, mit Kunststoff zu experimentieren und eine Modelliermasse entwickelt, die man im Ofen brennen konnte, wie Schnorrer sagt. Da Sophie Rehbinder-Kruses Spitzname Fifi war und sie Mosaik liebte, gab sie der Masse den Namen „Fimoik“.
