Something strange happened at the Redpath Museum recently. Almost overnight, an eclectic mix of stuffed and mounted African mammals turned up on its third surprise landing. Nestled amongst an old gorilla specimen and the skull of a hippopotamus, new creatures, including a lion, a bongo, a leopard, an oryx, an eland and a hippopotamus, by a hair's breadth to name a few, now wait to be admired. So just how did these fascinating creatures suddenly surface in the only natural history museum in Quebec?

Last month, a collection of 72 African mammals was donated to the Redpath. Affinity to a single private donor, it included over two dozen different species of African mammals, ranging from some of the continent’s most well-known large carnivores, the lion and leopard, to the smaller lesser known bush herbivores like the dik-dik and oribi (shallow antelopes).

The entire group of specimens was collected and donated by Ghassan Jabre, an avid outdoorsman and huntsman. Until they were moved to the Redpath, the collection was housed in the basement of his St-Lambert home.

A protein discovered in fruit fly eyes has brought a Johns Hopkins duo closer to truce how the considerate core and other organs automatically “directly measurements” themselves, a portion of dirt that may persevere clues to controlling cancer.

The protein, named Kibra, is linked to a relay of chemical signals leading for shaping and sizing chain broadening by coordinating oversee of cubicle escalation and termination, according to digging published Feb. 16 in Developmental Stall by teams at Johns Hopkins and Florida State universities.

In a series of experiments, the scientists manipulated Kibra’s r in a signaling network called the Hippo pathway, which consists of several proteins working together as a braking system. Counterparts of the components in the Hippo pathway in flies are found in most animals, suggesting that this pathway may act as a “far-reaching regulator” of unit appraise contain, according to Duojia Pan, a professor of molecular biology and genetics at the Johns Hopkins University Teaching of Pharmaceutical and an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Alliance.
