Sophomore Jill Goldberg had ice running through her veins as she sent Cedar Grove old folks' a winner with her two free-throws to put the Panthers ahead 38-37 against West Essex in the semifinals of the Respite Basketball Tournament on Tuesday at Caldwell College.
Cedar Grove trailed 37-36 after Natalie Cafone's layup with under a flash to go in the game. Goldberg was fouled with just a second left to go and a wager to win the game.
"I was shaking I was so nervous," Goldberg said.
Both of Goldberg's shots were proper and the Panthers escaped with a trip to face Verona in the finals on Thursday.
"It felt dazzling, like I won the lottery," Goldberg said of hitting the two clutch shots. "We be stricken to win and have heart. We do what we have to to win."
Cedar Grove led by as many as 10 points in the game. The Panthers led 26-16 in the third domicile after junior Erica O'Hagan's jump shot but the Knights rallied back. West Essex tied the meeting at 28 but senior Gianna Cuffari hit a pair of free throws to keep them at bay a bit longer.
