At what age does an entrepreneurial gene drop-kick in? At 33? At 26?

For Sophia "Sophie" Poppenberg, it's 13. This Quaker Valley Halfway School seventh-grader is the namesake of Sophie's Sweets, a block-baking hobby turned semipro. She is the order-taker, baker and deliverer of her cakes.

Sophie, of Sewickley, got hooked on baking three years ago after making cookies with her mom. Inadequate to upgrade and expand her skills, she baked her first cake for her 11th birthday and got hooked on decorating them. Fun cakes, freakish cakes, customized cakes, cake pops, cupcakes -- no two the same -- graced the pud tables of family and friends.

"Then a friend's mom asked me to bake two cakes -- one for a birthday, one for a graduation," Sophie says. "And she paid me!"

Bingo.

Thanks to the raves of relations, friends, teachers and neighbors, word spread and Sophie started getting orders. Function cards, an order pad and a chef's jacket followed. Sophie's Sweets is on Facebook, too, and you can communicate with her at sophiapoppenbergbakery@gmail.com .
