ALTON - A Godfrey lady-in-waiting is ensuring there will be Christmas cheer each year at the YWCA with her gift of a overblown, artificial evergreen tree imported from Belgium that she bought in Beverly Hills.
The well decorated tree, which Evelyn Johnson donated this fall, stands in the northwest corner of the promote of the YWCA, 304 E. Third St., its 11 feet topped by a silvery angel.
Strings of gold-colored beads wrap about the greenery. The glittering beads company large, shiny musical instrument ornaments, cheery red balls and bows, good angels, purple dangles and other festive trimmings.
"It is very statuesque, and raise made than those from the United States or China," Johnson said about the tree, which she bought more than 20 years ago for $250 from a important-end, I. Magnin store going out of business.
"I told them if that tree doesn't peddle for $400, I would buy it," she said. "Now, it would run about $1,000."
At first, she said she put the tree away, but it eventually found a noted spot in her California home during Christmas seasons.
