I'm agitated about the 2012 spring turkey season.
"What's new?" says my wife. "You're perturbed with each new hunting or fishing season."
Contrary to what my wife believes, I have sympathetic reason to be excited. This season could prove to be one of the best in the past 10 years. The Missouri Hinge on of Conservation reports the state's wild turkey population is up for the 2012 mellow after a great production year in 2011. The hatch was the best in a decade and 42 percent above the last 5-year standard in the main, with northeast Missouri more than double the 5-year average. I hunt in the northeast district.
Last deer season I observed more turkeys where I hunt, with large flocks of 1- and 2-year-old masculine turkeys, banded together for the winter. The icing on the cake came the last weekend when two gobblers roosted in trees in the offing my deer stand. The next morning they dropped down to the field in front to feed. No deer, but it was fun watching the gobblers gratified.
Turkey season opens April 16 and runs through May 6 with an initially season for kids aged 11-16 years from March 31 to April 1. Teen must have a valid turkey permit and be accompanied by an adult.
