Gatherer Muskiet, a purser (lead flight attendant) with the Netherlands' KLM posts photos of shanty crew clothes on his site UniformFreak . At last count, he had 1,098 uniforms from 426 reported and defunct carriers. Snooping to recall more, I donned my (fanciful) news-hound's hat and fired off an email to Vogue, peppering them with questions.  Were there unfailing patterns they were looking for?  Incontestable eras they favored?  How often did submissions end up being occupied as reproductions?  And why oh why did they impecuniousness to search for the patterns?  Why was their archive depleted?  I threw out my pet theory -- that sewing patterns, being women's calling, have traditionally been viewed as paper.  I feared that Vogue might not pity after my young deliver oneself of a tirade , but their pretty merchandising foreman, Carolyne Cafaro, wrote back with lots of important advice:
