One of our workrooms in Asia truly inspired me on my most recent blunder with great ideas for valances and drapery.

Every designer knows the value of enormous window treatments. Dress the windows and suddenly the room feels unalloyed. Like icing on a cake, they are the sweet topping that makes a dwelling irresistible.

Drapery softens the edges of a space, frames the view and confirms a convergent point. But often window coverings can have that ‘same old, same old’ feel to them.

It’s arbitrary we find the perfect fabrics for our windows, but trimming them is just as important. Swag, boxed or ruffled valances and drapery panels become youthful and edgy when swathed with chains, core flowers, feathers, pearls and zippers – yes, zippers. I loved what I saw and can’t linger to bring some of these ideas home.

For a modern space, how about simply hanging strips of confine instead of fabric for drapery? If you want a moveable drape, hang particular chains from a traverse rod. If you don’t need to slide the chain from side to side, then hanging the chains from cup hooks established at evenly spaced intervals to the underside of a drapery box will do the trick.
