Condensed fluorescent bulbs, or CFLs, are effective, simple, durable and bucks-saving alternatives to the incandescent light bulbs that have been used since coal oil lamps went out and stirring lighting began.

But a drawback to a CFL bulb is that it contains a dangerous import called mercury. Mercury is a heavy metal that has been used in fluorescent lamps for very much a long time. Since the advent of CFLs, the danger of exposure to mercury is greater because of the sheer loads of CFLs compared with incandescent bulbs.

The amount of mercury in a CFL is quite low compared with other products. For norm, the average CFL contains about 4 milligrams (mg) of mercury. By comparison, older thermometers contained about 500 mg of mercury, which would adequate for the amount of mercury contained in 125 CFLs. While even that doesn't sound like much, mercury is a cumulative metal, which means spongy items and clothing cannot be cleaned by common methods such as laundering or wiping. Items exposed to the solidity must be properly discarded.
